Officially launched to
coincide with the Bicentennial celebrations of Australia in 1988. This sculpture
was a gift to the people of the Gold Coast, the project brief initiated
by the Rotarians of Southport. They asked for several sandstone shapes for
placement as stand alone sculptures. I drew up five ideal shape ideas, the
sixth though was quite different. Featuring, as shown a tall ship sailing
out of a sandstone monolith. Carved and transported to site by a Mr. Farrell
of the hinterland, its launch by then Alderman Lex Bell has witnessed the
surrounding streetscape go through many dramatic changes. The Rock with
supporting plaque has remained a permanent icon and city landmark throughout
these changes. It's located at the corner of Nerang and Scarborough Streets,
Southport. |
